Muar Town ~ Talk of the Otak-Otak

Muar -  A small town where you can satisfy all your craves #cuticutimalaysia #roadtolocaldelights
Running out of idea where to visit when you're having a continuous public holiday in a row?

During the peak seasons, when all tourist spots are flooded with crowds and it certainly becomes meaningless to participate into the long and endless queue just to have a drinks or meal. It defeats your purpose of having a chill-out trips essentially and it adds up your stress instead.
I remembered queuing for a chicken rice ball in Melaka for few hours under a hot sun. It was really torturing.

I would suggest you reroute to another option to a town neighbouring to Melaka. MUAR. About 1 hour drive from Melaka. To evade the jam the thoroughfare, exit Jasin and use the inner road to reach muar. Along the way, you can stop by to buy some local fruits stall stationed right at the roadside. Highlight: Dokong

2 days 1 night trip in Muar ( 1 - 2September 2018)

1. Stop by Seremban for breakfast

Journey to Muar took us about 2 and half hours. Hence we stopped over seremban2 for breakfast. You don't have to drive in to seremban town, after entering to seremban toll, just route to seremban2 for breakfast. Traffic will be much manageable in Seremban2. There are many kopitiam there too to ease your hunger.
We've chosen this kopitiam AMC selera for filling up out stomach before continue our journey to Muar. Try the signature *LAKSA PAN MEE* & *FISH PASTE NOODLE* of course the coffee & toast. They're simply too perfect to start up your day.

When you're using inner road to Muar after exiting Jasin, you will come by many fruit stalls selling Dokong near SG Rambai. The very famous fruits here is Dokong. Stop by to buy some to ease your crave. The Dokong here is very succulent and huge in size. Rest assured that you will be satisfied with the reasonable price and the freshness of the fruit. 3 kg = RM 10.00.

3. Jurassic dinosaurs park @  Donhu ( 麻坡东湖恐龙园)

This is the park where all the kids can spend their time other than their electronic gadgets. Without having spent much money, you can have a family bonding in this park as well as triggering kids imagination towards this extinct creatures B.C. Don't underestimate this dinosaur park as most Malaysian would not put high hopes especially when the park set within a small town.
I would recommend this parks to you and rest assured that you will have fun. The dinosaur statues are vivid and some are enormous and as tall as a 3 level buildings, there're built in with sound effects and slight movement.
If you come on Weekend, you would probably bump into a mascot man wearing dinosaur skin as real as it's to scare all the kids. It will be running around with fast speed and yell on you if you dare to tease him.

Try out this !

2. Check in to MUO RESORT

We found this Muo Resort online with positive comments and recommendation. So we've booked this and stayed a night here. This resort is fenced up with its private compound. The surroundings are superb and there are many activities within the resort compound too. For instance, free bicycle, table tennis, swing, a reading & graphic room, outdoor chatting areas, a small petting animals cage, and free coffee corner. This resort is fabulous. Besides clean and urbanized decoration, I would say this is super value stay whereby you fork out a small budget in return of this boutique alike stay.
This isn't a normal hotel. It comes with a very unique designer decoration. Every room is well made up. Thumbs up!

4. Food street at Gluten Street ( 贪吃街)

One word to describe MUAR as a whole - FOOD! Forget your dietary plan. Muar local food will stretch you stomach capacity to optimal. You will never resist the wonderful food seduction. If you're not a food lover, then you find it a lot boring in MUAR.
Everyone is searching for good, fantastic & excellent food here.
Food street located at Jalan Haji Habu is the place that you will disregard all your pre-existing sickness and give the full blast to your stomach with spicy, fried, satay, noodles, pastries & many many more.

Must try foods -
a. Ah Choy Wan Tan Mee. (亚才云吞面)

b. Fried stuff - Yao Tiao
Variety of fried stuff. Crispy and crunchy

c. Otak- otak
There're many otak otak stalls located in this place.
Personally, I prefer the following: -
Fish flavour : 顺顺乌达
Prawn flavour: Mr. OTAK OTAK
( alternative) Frozen & ALL flavours : CHENG BOI ( located outside the food street)

MR. OTAK OTAK

顺顺乌达

d . Goreng Pisang ( fried banana)

There is a motor cart selling goreng Pisang near to the Hainam kopitiam and just right in front of 69 & Muar Yi shop . You can easily locate this goreng Pisang when you walk till the end of the food street. The banana that they used is giant banana as shown in the picture. This is the largest banana that I've ever seen.
They slice it into a small piece before they deep fry it. Super crunchy. And I like the taste whereby the outer layer is crispy and the banana quoted inside s still moist and fresh. Well mix !

e.  Pastries
Variety of pastries you can find in this 贪吃街 food street. A little sweetness to cheer your day up.

f. Bread & confectionary

These 2 stalls are probably the most traditional bakery in this town. While everyone is visiting air-conditioned bakery shop with awesome dispaly at the shelf, these 2 bread sellers are still insisting their product authentication with a mobile cart.
They do not have a nice display but rest assured you that the bread is the most classic and you'll definitely find it's uniqueness as well as the taste you've been wistfully searching for long. It also reminds me the mobile cart that I used to deal with during my childhood time.

g. Herbal tea

After eating all the hot & spicy foods, let's drink a cup of herbal tea which only cost you RM 70cent. Reduce the heat in your body and keep you body hydrated. Refreshing!

5. Tanjung Emas Square

Take an evening stroll at this tanjung emas park. It has been recently renovated. I would say this is rather a nice park for a family picnic or outdoor activities. It's a very spacious park by the bay. Best time to visit is evening as the weather is charming a d windy.
You can walk along the bay and the whole side walk is about 300 meters long.
You can enjoy the scenery of the calm river and some exotic birds watching.
There are other memorial sites in the centre of the park with historical trail. Check out too. ( trains statue, Canon & etc)
If you visit on evening, pls walk till the edge and pierce through the muar coffee shop and you will come by a rocky cliff. That's the best spot for SUN SET WATCHING ! IT'S ASTONISHING. You can't imagine how beautiful the closing day is. Come & witness. You can perfectly snap some silhouette photos too.

6. Street Arts @ Laluan Budaya Maharani

Wall painting arts become very popular in Muar. Instead of refurbishing the crack and aged building wall, muar government has decided to turn them into artistic wall for tourist attraction. Every price of wall is drawn with some arts which implies some cultural meaning.
You can see the efforts & passion of the artist.
Snap of picture in front of this wall, keep this memory before it's fading as a result of rain and storm.
Keep and eye of every piece of picture. You'll be connected to the artist who's trying to deliver some hidden messages.
This street arts was just launched on May 2018.

7. Mister coffee station

Muar is well-known with their local brew coffee. This coffee shop is inspired by their local coffee lovers.
Muar town is always lingered with coffee scent and aroma. Some say local people need a cup of coffee each day to start up their working day.
Hence you'll see a lot of coffee shop sprout out in this town  rapidly for the past few decades.
I've tried this mister coffee station. In fact the coffee is not as strong as 434. But they do have their in house brewing. And some of the coffee flavours are quite unique.

8. SAI KEE Elephant 434 coffee shop

This coffee shop is truly outstanding. You should never never miss when you're here. The richness and aroma of their coffee will trigger your brain cell circulation and leave you speechless.
I would suggest you to go on morning breakfast. Order their otak nasi lemak and mee siam + toast bread +elephant coffee. What a perfect match!
There is hidden meaning of 434. If I tell you this is a telephone no. Do you believe It? Do discover yourself.
This is the coffee shop highly recommended by all muar ppl.

9. Chicken delights ( 喜爱鸡)

There is a very classic fried chicken fast food restuarant located in the central of Muar. As we were unable to find any food stall open till late night and this fast food restaurant eventually  catched our attention. It's a very traditional fast food restaurant but surprisingly the chicken is amazingly sumptuous.
The meat is well marinated and the skin is super crispy.
Every bite is superb. If you're looking for supper in Muar, look out to this. They open till 10.30pm.

Location: 6-24 Jalan Ali, Pekan Muar.
Operating hours : 3pm - 10.30pm.

10. Mee Siput Muar

Don't forget to grab a local snack wherever you're. This mee siput snack is popular in Muar town. You can find this everywhere in either convenient store, hyper market, kopitiam or even mobile food cart. One piece cost only RM 1.50. I like the crunchiness and the dipping sauce. The taste is similar to mamee but it comes with a dipping sauce.
Pour the sauce into the mee siput and make sure the sauce covers the entire cookies. Eat it on the spot and you will be impressed with the crunchiness yet juicy with half soft texture.

Mee Siput Snack ( MAKE sure the dipping sauce is provided)
Location: anywhere in some convenient store, hawkers, food cart or kopitiam.

11. Other historical building in Muar town

Take a walk in Muar Town and you will come across a lot of historical buildings which recorded some memoirs of the past era of Muar Town. They've been going through a lot of cycle & changes. They've seen human come & go, the evolution of the city, and nothing is permanent. Until they're being demolished, then that will be the end of their life.
These building used to be the most elegant ones, and now they're faded with its colours and still housing some residents with generation.
Snap a picture while they're still in value and standing!
