We recently spent two days and one night at KOREF Farm, experiencing an authentic farm stay that truly brought us back to nature. With a series of outdoor activities, it was a refreshing escape from our daily routines, where we’re often glued to screens or buried in work. This top-notch farm stay offers a peaceful retreat nestled in one of the preserved forests of Kota Tinggi, far from the hustle and bustle of the city.
KOREF emphasizes sustainable, organic farming. All food served is sourced directly from the farm, and the accommodations are environmentally friendly. The plantation is free from pesticides, and the ingredients used in the meals are harvested from the farm’s organic produce. Even the meats are sourced from their in-house poultry farm.
This farm vacation offers a well-rounded experience, with a host of activities that keep you engaged throughout your stay. Honestly, two days and one night might not be enough to fully enjoy everything on offer. KOREF presents a complete package with an organized and thoughtfully planned itinerary.
A. Accommodation Options:
1. Tree House:
The tree house is a unique highlight of KOREF, built on an elevated platform connected by wooden bridges. There’s a lounging area and a large hanging net for guests to rest and relax, making it a perfect spot to chill.
2. Stone House:
Resembling a hobbit house, the Stone House offers spacious interiors with all necessary amenities like a bathroom, bedding, fans, and coolers. It can accommodate up to four people, making it ideal for families or small groups.
3. Airbnb Homestay:
For those who prefer something more conventional, the homestay option provides a concrete house designed for those who might not be as accustomed to nature-filled or adventurous stays. It’s perfect for city dwellers seeking comfort.
B. Meals:
KOREF’s meals include tea time, dinner, and breakfast, with all ingredients freshly harvested from their farm. The food is home-cooked, organic, and full of flavor. They also offer unique in-house products like:
- Salted eggs: Made from their own ducks’ eggs.
- Homemade buns:** Baked using a special traditional stove gifted by a guest, which ensures even heat for perfect baking.
- Kaya & flower jams:** Crafted from homegrown flowers and ingredients by the owner.

A rare and exotic wetland flowering scene unfolds as a unique tree, which takes over 15 to 20 years to reach its mature height of 20+ feet before it blooms. Once it flowers, the tree begins to fruit, and the main trunk or side branches gradually die off.
The bloom itself is fleeting, with the flowers wilting the very next day, and by the third day, the petals vanish entirely. Only the luckiest visitors ever witness this remarkable event in person. The fact that the bloom only lasts for three days, and only at night, makes it so special and almost impossible to witness in person.
E. Owner Profile:
Mr. Tam, the owner of KOREF, began his career as an agricultural consultant and has been running the farm stay for over 20 years. His vision and perseverance have transformed this once bare land into a unique resort covering over 180 acres which is equivalent to 72 heactare. His strategy of reinvesting profits into new facilities has allowed KOREF to continually grow and improve.
Besides the farm stay, Mr. Tam is involved in bird's nest farming (Now there are over 3 to 4 thousands birds) and has plans to expand the resort with a floating villa surrounded by paddy fields. His ultimate dream is to build a tropical water village, a first-of-its-kind concept in Malaysia. Other upcoming projects include a café and camping site at the top of the tower he built, which can accommodate up to 300 guests and offers panoramic views of the sea and forest.
Mr. Tam's three principles for running a farm stay are:
- Maximizing the Use of Available Resources: Ensuring that every resource on the farm is utilized efficiently to support sustainable growth and operations.
- Providing Education: Offering guests meaningful educational experiences about farming and sustainability, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of agriculture.
- Promoting Environmental Friendliness: Emphasizing eco-friendly practices in all aspects of the farm, from organic farming to sustainable living, to minimize the environmental impact.
Mr. Tam’s passion for innovation and his ability to adapt has helped him build a thriving business. He’s also open to collaborating with potential co-owners to further enhance the experience at KOREF, such as introducing new attractions like ATV rides or other farming projects.
His other legendary dream projects will be as follow
1. To have some exchange program with Taiwan 🇹🇼 farm stay
2. To further expand the resort with glampign sites
F. Personal Reflection:
Our stay at KOREF was rejuvenating, and both Mr. Tam and Teacher Yap (co-owner) were extremely hospitable. Teacher Yap Sensei, a former counselor, provided us with an in-depth tour and shared valuable insights into the farm’s concept. His kindness and patience made our stay even more memorable.
The knowledge and life experiences shared by Mr. Tam during our visit were invaluable. His dedication and hard work are evident in every aspect of KOREF. From starting with little to now running a successful farm stay, his journey is truly inspiring.
I wish him continued success in bringing all his innovative ideas to life. KOREF is a must-visit, and we’ll definitely be returning for another stay. It’s the perfect place to unwind, reconnect with nature, and spend quality time with loved ones!
