Pontian Johore - Pineapple Kingdom

Pontian Johore 🍍🍍🍍

A place where you can freely call pineapple is a KING of fruit.

My first time in pontian has given me a full insight of pineapple knowledge and the life of an authentic fishing village- Kukup.
Indeed, there are a lot of funs in pontian, other than best food and best pineapple farms, you will be able to gain a full tour to kukup island.
Do not expect any grand shopping malls nor amusement park. Yet you can rest assured that this plot of land abounds with natural resources will outweigh everything else in our sophisticated city life.  Its simply the best !

1. Tanjung Piai National Park

This is probably one of the longest mangrove board walk trail in Malaysia. Besides the beautiful mangrove forest, the board walk is extended to the centre of the sea to cater a panaroma sea view with meeting the 3 kingdoms direction. Indonesia, Singapore & Malaysia.
There are many different board walk trails within the forest, some are leading you to another side of the forest where you can walk along with the coast line.
One of the trail will lead you to the fishing platform. It's a very spacious plot of mangrove land. It's also a house of thousand habitats.
Get your camera ready, and every corner in the forest can be your shooting spot. This is probably one of the most gorgeous mangrove park I've ever visited.

It's a very educational exhibition.

3. Bugis museum

This museum run by a malay chap named Mr. Abdullah. All the antiques displayed in this museum are the priceless collection of him.
Walking into the museum, you will definitely be wowed by his unique & precious collections. Some are limited & rare items and mostly are no longer seen in this modern era.
This museum is set within a traditional Malay house. This house is featured with finest and distinctive decoration. It looks like a traditional Malay Kampung House influenced by western design.
We're truly impressed by the passions of Mr. Abdullah, the founder. He finally managed to outshine his interest and turn them into a publicly known attraction.

4. Pineapple farm

We all love pineapple, but we usually see the pineapple in a yellow sliced form and never have chance to sight the whole plant. It's even impossible to enter into a pineapple farm especially if you're a city boy or girl.
But in Pontian, your dream can come true. You can have a closest contact to the pineapple plant and be able to walk into the farm with millions of pineapple plants and crops.
Beware of thorn. Fruit is sweet but the plant is not easy to deal with.
Come to pontian and checkout this wonderful pineapple fields.

5. Dataran / Taman Diraja Pontian

This is a place where you can bring your kids and family for a chill-out in the evening. There is a very spacious square with some kiddies rides, and some food carts.
Usually this is the place for family bonding, couple dating as well as a friend chit chatting spots.
This dataran is located at the shoreline, so it's quite windy here and suitable for a evening walk.

Location : Jalan Osman, Kampung Atap.

KUKUP FISHING VILLAGE

6. Kukup ( Mangrove Park National Park)

This is another mangrove National Park located at Kukup Island.
Don't be confused with the mangrove park at Tanjung Piai. This is another one which requires you to take a boat ride to reach there.
This trail is shorter than Tanjung Piai and very well maintained.
The special highlight are the spiral watch tower and the wooden log steps.
When you're almost reaching the end of the trail, you'll see a very unique arch just like you're entering into a time tunnel.
There is also a big signboard of Kukup Island near the exit. Take a picture in front of it as remembrance.

Location : Kukup Island
Entrance ( National Park) - RM 5.00
Boat ride: 2 ways - RM 5.00
Operating Hours : 9am - 5pm (Open daily) Last Entry - 4pm

7. Fish rearing centre

There are about 72 fish rearing centres in Kukup Island. After visiting mangrove park, the boat will stop over at the fish rearing centre. You can alight here for a visit. However, you've to wait for another boat trip to go back to the jetty. Approximately 30 mins for another trip.

Location : Kukup Island
Route : stop over whilst on the way back to jetty

8. Boat ride

Boat ride is the only water transport in Kukup. Despite you're staying at the water chalet or visiting some of the fish rearing centres or even mangrove park as mentioned, you need a boat ride. Look for the boating company ( AH SAY). Their boat is more economic ( only RM5.00)- 2 ways. And the interior of their boat set up is more strategic which allowing you to have a holistic view of the fishing village when you're sitting at front seat.
Very good experience of having this boat ride. Watching the authentic living nature in this fishing village, free from pollution, politics, and materialism.

Location : Kukup Island
Boat Ride : RM 5.00
Recommendation Boat Company: Ah Say

9. Kampung Nelayan Air Masin (咸水港)

This kampung is located just within the walking distance from the kukup jetty. No boat is required. Take a walk in this village, and it gives you a full insight of a true living of a fishing village. All villagers built their own homes according to their preference. They're not hoping for any luxurious living, they're just hoping their loves one ( fisherman) will return home safely everyday with a adequate amount of harvest to sustain their happy family living. Isn't this is what we want eventually?

Location : Kampung Nelayan Air Masin
Free walking.

FOOD ~ YUM YUM

9. Pontian Wanton Noodles ( 兴兴云☁吞面)

Wanton Noodles in pontian is different from KL or any other places one. The main sauce that they used to mix the noodles is Tomato + Chilli Sauce. This is impressively nice. Personally I like the taste of sweet + spicy. Every strip of noodle is well blended with the sauce. Topped with the thin slice BBQ meat, that's so superb.
And the wanton (dumpling) , the filling is indescribably tasty. The wanton is stuffed with homemade paste, you can taste a very strong flat mouth fish mixture.
The stall tauke was very friendly and accomodative too. Their stall closed around 5.30pm and we were still on the way from Tanjung Piai. The tauke was so kind and he readily packed for us and hold until our arrival.
Eventually we had it in our car and it was still fresh and licking good.

Business Hour : 11am - 5.30pm (Closed Tuesday)
Per bowl : RM 5.00

10. Coxn Cafe

I must highlight that the view of this restaurant is so astonishing. Basically it's a western restaurant by the ocean. Tables are set up beside the shoreline and you can have a perfect candle light dinner or lunch by the ocean with your love ones.
The view is so breathaking, watching sun set at the sea horizon, soft sea breeze gently tap on your face, quite and tranquillity, choppy sea with waves woooshh woooshh...
If you're coming here for proposal, I would say the chance of saying YES is 99%. Haha

Location: Ibrahim, Jalan Parit Dukacita, Kampung Rimba Terjun.
Business Hour : 6pm to 12am (Closed Wednesday)
Highlights : Cheesy Fries, Syrup Bandung & western food)

11. Pontian Lau Pasar Hawker (night)

Foodies shouldn't miss this spot.
This hawker gathers all localised food and it's always the choice of locals .
Special highlight - Fried Chicken, pork satay & fried Keuy Teow. Instead of using prawn, they're using mini squid as their key fried kuey teow ingredient. The kuey teow is abit wet, if you're preferring a dried version, then this may not be your cup of tea.

Location : Jalan Bakek Jaya 2, Kampung Atap.
Business Hour : 6pm - 11pm ( Closed Monday)
Highlights : pork satay, fried chicken.

12. Typical food stall in Car wash area ( night)

Many locals will stop by this place for dinner. It's not easily noticed as there is no name for this food stall. It's located within a car wash compound.
They're selling some local delicacies like mini packed nasi lemak & Bihun,  Chinese Pastries, dessert and kopitiam style beverages.
I would recommend the mini nasi lemak with prwan sambal. It's very tasteful and savoury.

Location: Behind Lau Pasar ( no name) locate the car wash area.
Highlights : mini packed nasi lemak (udang)
Cost  RM 1.00 - RM 1.20 per pack

13. Breakfast @ Kheng Guan Hiong

Excellent spot for breakfast.
Charcoal grilled bread, fried noodles, roti canai, and many more.
It's a typical kopitiam in pontian but with combination of 3 races foods.
Begin your journey with this awesome breakfast meal. I would say everything is nice in this stall.
